Let’s use a softer, more subtle tool that each of us already has to combat the destructive force of violence. Each of us is a leader . When you think about an effective leader, what characteristics come to mind? You likely envision someone who’s approachable, kind, a great listener, calm under pressure, and capable of making clear, objective decisions. These traits are hallmarks of high emotional intelligence. But what exactly is emotional intelligence? It’s the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions and how they affect those around you. It also involves perceiving others’ emotions, which helps in managing relationships and avoiding conflicts.
Daniel Goleman, the American psychologist who popularized the concept, identified five traits of emotionally intelligent people. The first is self-awareness. Self-aware individuals understand their emotions and how these feelings impact others. They are confident, trust their intuition, and are honest about their strengths and weaknesses, knowing what they need to improve.
The second trait is self-regulation, which is the ability to control emotions and impulses. People who self-regulate don’t let anger or jealousy take over; they act with integrity and think critically and objectively.
Motivation is the next element of emotional intelligence. Motivated individuals look beyond short-term outcomes and focus on the effort needed to achieve long-term goals. They enjoy challenges and productivity.
The fourth trait is empathy, the ability to recognize and understand others’ feelings and perspectives. Empathetic people understand others’ needs and wants, even when not explicitly stated.
Finally, good social skills are crucial to emotional intelligence, enabling individuals to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively. Emotional intelligence is a vital skill in today’s world, particularly for leaders. It enhances self-understanding and helps in connecting with others, making it a skill worth developing.
Now that we understand what emotional intelligence is , we can use this more subtle tool to lead our country away from the violence that plagues it into the awesome land it really is.
