🦒 October 2025 – United Nations Day
Theme: Participation in Society – Global Inclusion and Cooperation
Date: 24 October 2025
Quote:
“Equality is not a vision for the future. It is the work we do now, together.”
Today, on United Nations Day, we pause to recognise the shared vision that connects nations, communities, and individuals — a vision built on peace, dignity, and human rights for all. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) reminds us that disability inclusion is not a separate agenda. It is central to every goal of sustainable development and every measure of justice.
For DeafBlind South Africans, this global commitment is deeply personal. It affirms that the right to participate in society — through education, work, communication, and civic life — belongs to everyone. The barriers that prevent access are not natural; they are man-made. And because they are man-made, they can be changed.
Global awareness days like this one remind us that inclusion begins at home. When communities make public spaces accessible, when governments enforce disability laws, and when society listens to DeafBlind voices, the ideals of the United Nations become living, local realities.
The promise of “Disability Rights Are Human Rights” is not just a slogan — it is a call to action. A call to every policymaker, every neighbour, every institution, to stand for equality in their daily choices.
DeafBlind South Africa’s Closing Message:
On United Nations Day, we stand with the global community in reaffirming that inclusion, accessibility, and mental well-being are human rights. Each step toward equality, no matter how small, strengthens the world we share. Let us continue to build a South Africa — and a world — where DeafBlind people can participate fully, freely, and with dignity.
