Moving with confidence : Navigating spaces

The first route a DeafBlind person should identify and map out for themselves is the path from their bed to the bathroom (or another frequently used essential space, such as the kitchen).

Why?

  1. Daily Necessity :T he bathroom is one of the most frequently used spaces, especially at night or early in the morning.

  2. Safety : Moving while still half-awake or in an emergency (like feeling unwell) can increase the risk of falls or disorientation.

  3. Building Confidence : Successfully navigating this route builds muscle memory and increases comfort in moving around the home.

  4. Establishing a Mental Map : This first familiar route serves as a foundation for expanding to other parts of the home with confidence.

Once this path is mastered, the person can map out routes to other essential areas, such as the kitchen, front door, or workspace, gradually expanding their independence and mobility.
