“When awareness grows, so does responsibility.”

As October comes to a close, we reflect on the journey we have shared under the banner “Disability Rights Are Human Rights.” This month has highlighted the right to mental health care, access to transport and public spaces, protection from harm, and full participation in society. Each message has one truth: our rights are not abstract; they are living tools we can use to shape our communities.

One law that helps make this practical is the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (PEPUDA, 2000). At its core, PEPUDA is simple: it says that no one can be treated unfairly or excluded because of who they are, including if they have a disability. It ensures that every person can participate in work, education, public services, and community life without fear of discrimination.

For DeafBlind South Africans, PEPUDA is more than words on paper. It is a tool for everyday action. If someone is denied a service, treated unfairly at school, or ignored in public spaces, PEPUDA gives them the right to speak up, demand change, and hold others accountable. It turns equality from a concept in law into a lived reality.

This principle also connects directly to the conversations we are about to have in November. Just as October has focused on rights, awareness, and inclusion, November will focus on community protection, positive masculinity, and building safe spaces. PEPUDA reminds us that respecting everyone’s rights — especially the most vulnerable — is not optional. It is the foundation for trust, safety, and mutual respect in our families, workplaces, and communities.

DeafBlind South Africa’s Closing Message:

Rights are powerful when they are understood and enforced. PEPUDA gives every person the ability to claim their equality and ensure others are treated fairly. As we move into November, let us take these lessons from awareness into action, building communities that protect, respect, and honour every individual — where rights are not just read, but lived.
