Mental Health Awareness : the hands that hold us up

🦒 October 2025 – World Mental Health Day

Theme: Recognition of Advocacy and Support

Date: 10 October 2025

Quote:

“Awareness is the bridge between silence and change.”

Today, on World Mental Health Day, DeafBlind South Africa joins the national call to recognise the tireless advocacy groups who fight for inclusion, access, and dignity for all persons with disabilities. Organisations such as the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD), and the Mental Health Society of South Africa have shown what true commitment looks like.

Their work reaches far beyond policy. It touches lives. It shapes systems. It ensures that people who are DeafBlind — and all persons with disabilities — can claim their right to basic care, support, and understanding. Without their advocacy, many would still face barriers to the most fundamental aspects of life: health, education, employment, and respect.

Advocacy transforms awareness into action. It gives voice to those who have been overlooked and builds bridges between communities, professionals, and government. Each policy reviewed, each training held, and each awareness campaign run is a step toward a South Africa where mental health and disability inclusion are seen as part of the same human rights promise.

DeafBlind South Africa’s Closing Message:

Today we honour every advocate, volunteer, and organisation working for change. Your efforts are seen and deeply appreciated. Without your work, DeafBlind people would not have the same opportunity to claim their rights to care, dignity, and access. Together, we continue building a future where rights are not requested — they are realised.
