Move like a penguin

Happy World Penguin Day!

Why don’t penguins play tennis?

Because they’re afraid of the net!

Penguins may waddle, slide, and shuffle, but don’t let that fool you. These little snow champions are built for movement, showing us that everyone has their own unique rhythm.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, as the temperature drops and snow blankets Lesotho’s mountains, we salute the penguins for thriving in the cold. Let’s be honest, humans aren’t built like that! But we can learn from their persistence and graceful movement.

This week, we’re celebrating sport and movement in the DeafBlind community. Whether it’s goalball, tactile yoga, sensory walking, or just a good dance to music you can feel, movement connects us to our bodies, lifts our moods, and builds community.

Slide into your version of movement today, waddle, roll, stretch, or groove. Just keep going, penguin style.

Adaptive & Inclusive Sport Resources:

Goalball SA – A sport designed specifically for persons with visual impairments, using a ball with bells.

Inclusive Dance SA – Adapted dance sessions using tactile rhythm and body movement.

DeafBlind SA WhatsApp Support Group – A safe space to ask about local accessible sport options or share your own routines.

Cape Town Society for the Blind – Occasionally hosts movement-based workshops open to people with additional disabilities.

Tactile Yoga Videos & Guides – Ask your support group for braille-formatted or described versions.

Remember: It’s not about speed or strength, it’s about joy, movement, and connection.
