Did you know that April 16 is World Voice Day? It’s a global celebration of the power of voice, how we express ourselves, connect with others, and make our presence known. But here’s the truth: not all voices are heard through sound.
For many in the DeafBlind community, self-expression happens through movement, touch, writing, gestures, or creative storytelling. World Voice Day reminds us that everyone deserves the right to be heard, and that voice comes in many forms.
Back in February, during our Love Beyond Words challenge, we explored how meaningful connection can be built through subtle, touch-based communication methods, like shared rhythms, hand-over-hand gestures, scent associations, or simple mutual presence. These gentle forms of expression are just as powerful, and they help us connect even when words or visuals aren’t available.
So how can DeafBlind individuals embrace self-expression and be heard in their own powerful way?
- Explore Your Communication Style
Whether it’s tactile signing, braille, drawing, or emotional expression through movement, your voice matters, no matter the format.
- Be Bold About Who You Are
Expressing your values, preferences, and culture builds understanding and strengthens your presence in any space.
- Join Conversations That Matter
Spaces like the DeafBlind Community Support WhatsApp group offer a safe and empowering place to share, connect, and be heard.
- Advocate with Confidence
Even gentle expressions have impact. Whether you advocate through words, art, or action, being visible and present makes a difference.
Remember:
“Your voice can change the world, even if it’s not spoken out loud.”
Let’s honour the many beautiful ways DeafBlind individuals express who they are. On World Voice Day, we celebrate expression in all its forms, because every voice deserves space to be felt, heard, and respected.
